Evra urges Carrick to replace Luke Shaw before deadline, naming Lewis Hall as ideal fit

Patrice Evra has publicly called on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick to move on from Luke Shaw and sign a new left-back before the summer transfer window closes on September 1, following the club’s 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City.

The former United and France full-back was blunt in his assessment of Shaw’s long-term prospects at Old Trafford. “Luke Shaw, I love you, but it’s going to be a tough season for him,” Evra said. “He’s been at the club for years, he’s had a lot of injuries that killed his football career. When I talk with him, he’s still traumatised by them — he wouldn’t go 100 per cent into every challenge.”

Evra went further, arguing that Shaw’s injury record makes him an unreliable option for a club with United’s ambitions. “I think his time has gone. If Luke Shaw can give me a 35-game season, then that’s a good season — but if he doesn’t play at least 35 games in a row, Man United fans will go crazy. I love Luke Shaw, but I love Man United even more. That’s why I’m saying they need another left-back.”

Newcastle’s Lewis Hall has emerged as a leading candidate, with United having monitored the England defender for some time. Hall is valued at around £60 million, and while no formal bid has yet been submitted, the clock is ticking. Evra backed the move despite Hall conceding a penalty against Liverpool last weekend. “He’s a great player — we’re talking about consistency. He gives you 90 minutes, guaranteed. That’s the kind of left-back Man United need.”

Carrick has invested significantly in midfield this summer but the left-back position remains a visible gap in the squad. Depth behind Shaw is a serious concern, and with the deadline approaching, pressure on the United manager to act is intensifying.

Alternative targets are also under consideration. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas have all been identified as options, though Hall appears to be the preferred profile.

Evra, who left United in 2014, also noted that the left-back role has never been adequately filled since his departure, going as far as to suggest Ashley Young had been the most consistent occupant of the position in the years that followed — a pointed comment that underlines just how long the problem has persisted.
