Jamie Carragher has issued a public apology to Aston Villa after the Premier League club announced it would pursue legal action against the former Liverpool defender and television pundit over remarks he made about the club’s standing in English football.

The row erupted during a debate over whether Aston Villa manager Unai Emery would leave to join Manchester United, with Carragher dismissing criticism from Villa supporters and telling them to “shut the f*** up” in a post on X. Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris subsequently labelled the comments “unacceptable insults” and the club confirmed on Friday that it was taking legal action.

Carragher moved quickly to draw a line under the dispute. Posting on X, he wrote: “I’d like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners & their fans. My language this week was clumsy & wrong. I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it’s not come across that way, so apologies. Good luck today UTV!”

The episode underlines the growing assertiveness of Aston Villa’s ownership under Sawiris and co-owner Wes Edens, who have overseen a significant rise in the club’s fortunes since taking over in 2018. Villa’s return to European competition and their push for a top-four Premier League finish have sharpened the club’s sense of its own identity, making Carragher’s dismissive framing of their size all the more inflammatory to supporters.

Whether Villa will now drop the threatened legal proceedings following Carragher’s apology has not been confirmed by the club.
