Evloev challenges Volkanovski for UFC featherweight title with zero finishes in 10 wins
Movsar Evloev faces Alexander Volkanovski for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 333 on October 24 in Abu Dhabi, having won all 10 of his UFC bouts by decision. The Russian contender argues that wrestling and tactical skill are just as valuable to knowledgeable fans as knockouts or submissions.
Movsar Evloev will challenge Alexander Volkanovski for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 333 on October 24 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi — a title shot that arrives despite the Russian having never finished a single opponent across his 10 UFC victories, all of which came by decision.
Evloev is unapologetic about his record and pushes back against the idea that only finishes keep a fighter relevant inside the UFC. Speaking to MMA Fighting, he pointed to his title opportunity as evidence that the promotion and its fanbase value more than blood.
“I have zero finishes in UFC, but I’m still in the UFC and I’m fighting for the title,” Evloev said. “That means only finishes are not important. To show a good fight is also important. If you have no finish, you can still show a good fight, an exciting fight; you can show the beauty of wrestling. There are not just fans of MMA who just wait for blood. There are so many good fans who know MMA, and they understand, and maybe because of them I’m still in the UFC.”
The debate over finishes and fighter retention has intensified recently following the departures of Michael Page and Farid Basharat from the UFC roster. Both fighters were released despite active winning streaks, though the organisation has not cited a lack of finishes as the specific reason for either decision. The cases have nonetheless prompted wider discussion about what the UFC values when deciding which athletes to re-sign.
Evloev’s counter-argument centres on the idea that wrestling-heavy, technically disciplined performances carry their own entertainment value for fans who understand the sport at a deeper level. His 10-fight unbeaten run in the UFC — built entirely on outpointing opponents — has been enough to earn him a shot at one of the promotion’s most decorated champions in Volkanovski, a two-time featherweight titleholder.
