Julian Erosa retired from the UFC on his own terms at UFC Vegas 123, knocking out Jeong Yeong Lee in 91 seconds to cap a career he described as having a “fairytale ending.” The 37-year-old featherweight had committed to retirement before the bout, win or lose.

The finish was not without drama. Lee dropped Erosa early in the first round, but the veteran recovered, landed a clean right hand that sent Lee to the canvas, and closed the fight out with follow-up punches at the 1:31 mark.

“It’s the fairytale ending to my career,” Erosa said afterward. “In my mind, I was battling the things about, like, if I lose, how am I gonna feel about that walking away? But that’s why I had to be content with the decision of this being my retirement way beforehand, before I even got a fight.”

Erosa said making the call early was deliberate — it allowed him to treat the fight as just another contest rather than letting the weight of a final appearance cloud his preparation and performance.

“I wanted to make the fight about retirement, but I wanted the fight to be like any other fight,” he said. “Tomorrow’s my retirement. Still, I’m a fighter today.”

The mindset appeared to serve him well. Despite the early scare, Erosa was composed enough to turn the fight around and walk away with the result he had hoped for, even if he had steeled himself for the possibility of defeat.
