Eriksen begins rehabilitation in Denmark after second cardiac episode
Nearly a month after his second cardiac arrest during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, Wolfsburg announced that Christian Eriksen will begin a rehabilitation programme in his home country. The midfielder's sporting future remains uncertain.
Christian Eriksen will begin his rehabilitation in Denmark, Wolfsburg announced in a statement released Thursday, nearly a month after the second cardiac episode suffered by the Danish midfielder in early June during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine.
The German club, relegated to the second division at the end of the season, specified that the decision was made following a discussion between the player and VfL’s general manager, Dieter Hecking. “Christian Eriksen will soon begin a rehabilitation programme. Following a discussion with VfL’s general manager, it was decided that the player would follow this programme in his home country, Denmark. VfL remains in regular contact with Christian and with the doctors treating him. We wish him all the best for the continuation of his rehabilitation,” the statement said.
This new episode comes four years after the cardiac arrest Eriksen suffered during Euro 2021. Resuscitated on the pitch, he then received an implantable defibrillator before resuming his career. During this June incident, the Dane quickly regained consciousness and was able to reach the ambulance under his own power.
Arriving at Wolfsburg last season under a two-year contract, Eriksen has just completed a difficult campaign, marked by the club’s relegation to Bundesliga 2. The question of whether he will continue his sporting career remains open: no decision has been communicated at this stage.
