Dougie Samuel leaves Spartans after 14 years following misconduct investigation

Dougie Samuel has left The Spartans FC after 14 years as head coach, the Edinburgh-based club confirmed, following an independent investigation into allegations of misconduct.

The 59-year-old had been placed on extended leave earlier this month before the club announced his permanent departure. “Following an independent investigation into allegations of misconduct, The Spartans FC Head Coach Douglas Samuel has left the club,” the club said in a statement, adding that it would make no further comment on the specific details of the investigation out of respect for the privacy of those involved.

Samuel had been the longest-serving manager in Scottish football, taking charge of Spartans in 2012. During his tenure he guided the club from the Lowland League into the SPFL, a promotion achieved three years ago.

Paul Thomson, who was appointed interim head coach when Samuel first stepped away, will continue in that role for the foreseeable future. Mixu Paatelainen, the club’s sporting director and a former manager of Hibernian and Kilmarnock, has also assisted the coaching staff during the transition.

Spartans currently sit third in the fourth tier of Scottish football after eight matches of the season, their most recent outing ending in a 3-0 defeat at Dumbarton.

Earlier this year, Samuel had reflected on his unexpectedly long spell at the club as he approached 5,000 days in charge. “Absolutely not!” he said when asked whether he had anticipated staying for 14 years. “I’m not somebody who sort of looks that far ahead in my life. I’ve got goals and aspirations, but I try to live my life in the moment, in the present.”

Samuel also spoke candidly about a health scare in his early fifties, revealing he had suffered a heart attack during a spin class while his wife was on the bike beside him. “It was a real wake-up call. I was very, very lucky,” he said, noting that the episode led to him receiving stents and reassessing his approach to work.
