VAR transcript reveals why Bassey handball was waved off as United salvage Fulham draw

Manchester United were handed the Premier League’s official VAR transcript explaining why Calvin Bassey’s handball went unpunished during their 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage, as Matheus Cunha’s 89th-minute deflected effort rescued a point for Michael Carrick’s side.

The incident occurred shortly after Lisandro Martínez had bundled an own goal into his net. The Argentine clipped the ball onto Bassey’s arm as the Fulham defender raised his hands toward his face, prompting furious appeals from United players. Referee Peter Bankes waved play on, a call the VAR studio subsequently confirmed.

The Premier League Match Centre released the transcript of the studio’s deliberation: “The referee’s call of no penalty to Manchester United for a potential handball offence by Bassey was checked and confirmed by VAR. AR1: ‘It’s close to his body — it has hit but his arm is close to his body’. REF: ‘On-field decision is play on’. VAR: ‘Arms close to his body. As seen — confirming the on-field decision to play on, exactly as described on-field’.”

Several United defenders confronted Bankes after the final whistle, and Carrick was also seen speaking with the official on the pitch. Former United striker Louis Saha, analysing the incident post-match, reflected the wider confusion around handball rules. “It’s 50-50. You don’t know now with the rules,” he said. “Your natural instinct is to protect your face because you know you are going to be hit. But it’s different rules every weekend.”

Gary Neville was less sympathetic toward Bassey, arguing the defender invited the controversy. “It’s strange for a defender to put their hands up, because they know the referee will have to make a decision,” Neville said. “Bassey is asking for trouble.”

The draw prevented what would have been a third consecutive defeat across all competitions for United. Carrick acknowledged the difficult run of form but pointed to the supporters as a source of motivation. “We want more points, we’re going to have a spell where it’s not quite going for you and we’ve had a spell of that where small things have ended up as big things,” he told BBC Sport. “We need to win football matches. The supporters were top-drawer again today and we have to give them something to keep shouting about.”
