Carrick defends Mainoo substitution after Manchester United fans boo decision at Fulham

Michael Carrick has defended his decision to substitute Kobbie Mainoo in the closing stages of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Fulham on Saturday, after the move was met with boos from the away end at Craven Cottage.

Mainoo had been arguably United’s best player on the afternoon, yet Carrick opted to withdraw the 21-year-old academy graduate and introduce Mason Mount as he chased an equaliser. The gamble ultimately paid off when Matheus Cunha’s deflected strike cancelled out Lisandro Martinez’s disastrous own goal, earning Carrick a point and a measure of relief after a difficult start to his tenure.

“There’s always going to be certain reactions when you’re making changes,” Carrick said after the game. “I think Kobbie played well, to be honest, so it was just more of at that stage of the game we’re trying to make something happen and Kobbie understands that. He’s fine, I spoke to him after the game, he’s absolutely fine. He’s all about the team and what’s best.”

Carrick acknowledged the emotional response from supporters without taking offence, framing it as a natural reaction from a fanbase desperate for results. “I understand at times when chasing the game everyone’s a little bit emotional, the supporters are, as well they should be, they’re desperate for us to do the right thing. But I don’t take any negatives or offence to it.”

The United manager was keen to credit the travelling support despite the frustration directed at him in the moment. “The supporters were unbelievable today, I have to say, all the way through, and stuck with the boys and supported the boys. At least we’ve given them something small at the end to take from it, and I’m sure there’s more to come.”

The draw gives United a slender foothold heading into the international break, though the reaction to Mainoo’s withdrawal underlines the scrutiny Carrick faces as he attempts to steady a side that has struggled badly for consistency this season.
