Domenech slams Fofana and Fernandez-Pardo sales, Ligue 1 condemned to develop talent without ambition

Raymond Domenech took aim at Olympique Lyonnais and LOSC on Monday on social media, denouncing a policy of selling the best players that, in his view, condemns French clubs to languish without ambition.

“Lille sells Fernandez Pardo, Lyon parts with Fofana. Economics prevails and by strengthening competition and weakening themselves, French clubs are condemning themselves to being nothing but feeder clubs without ambition. It’s a real shame,” wrote the former OL coach and player.

Domenech’s statement comes at a particular time for Lyon. After narrowly avoiding administrative relegation in summer 2025, the club has turned things around under Michele Kang’s direction, but the austerity policy aimed at cleaning up finances remains in effect. Malick Fofana’s departure to Sunderland now appears settled, even though OL managed without him for much of the past season.

Domenech’s stance quickly provoked mixed reactions. Several social media users pointed out the economic reality of the league: “And how do you do it with television rights revenue that’s virtually non-existent? There’s no money to boost Ligue 1,” one summarized. Others highlighted an imprecision in his reasoning regarding Fernandez-Pardo, already replaced at Lille by Ueda, arguing that the chosen example weakened his argument.

The debate over talent exodus from Ligue 1 is not new. Nearly all French clubs, with the exception of PSG, find themselves financially unable to retain their best players against offers from foreign leagues. Some Lille supporters even suggested that the case of Bouaddi, a talent far more difficult to replace, would have been a more relevant example.

It remains to be seen how OL intends to compensate for Fofana’s departure in this transfer window, even though the Rhône-based club demonstrated last season it could function without him.
