Dern retains UFC strawweight title at UFC 330, targets Suarez, Zhang or Godinez next
Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her UFC strawweight title with a unanimous decision over Gillian Robertson at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. The champion has since named Tatiana Suarez, Weili Zhang, and Lupita Godinez as potential next challengers.
Mackenzie Dern retained the UFC strawweight title at UFC 330 in Philadelphia on Saturday, outclassing Gillian Robertson via unanimous decision to record the first defence of her 115-pound belt. The Brazilian-American grappler improved her record to 17-5 with a performance that left little doubt about her dominance at strawweight.
Dern controlled the fight with her trademark grappling, neutralising Robertson’s own ground game in the process — a pointed response to Robertson’s pre-fight claim that she was the superior grappler. The judges were unanimous in their verdict.
Speaking in her post-fight interview, Dern was candid about what comes next, admitting she is not yet certain who her next opponent will be. She floated three names: Tatiana Suarez (12-1), former champion Weili Zhang (26-4), and Lupita Godinez (14-6).
“I know there’s Tatiana, Weili… Who else? Lupita could be coming up pretty soon,” Dern said.
Of the three, Suarez appears the most compelling option. The undefeated-until-recently contender challenged for the title against Zhang in February last year, losing that bout before rebounding with back-to-back wins over Amanda Lemos and Godinez. Her recent form and ranking make her a logical frontrunner for the next title shot.
Zhang, meanwhile, vacated the strawweight belt after defeating Suarez in order to move up and challenge for the women’s flyweight title, but she fell short against reigning 125-pound champion Valentina Shevchenko. A return to strawweight would set up a high-profile rematch dynamic with the division’s new queen.
Godinez is considered the least likely of the three to earn an immediate title shot. The Mexican contender has lost three of her last five bouts and has already been defeated by Dern, making a rematch a harder sell at this stage.
Dern’s first successful title defence cements her standing at the top of the strawweight division and sets up what could be a compelling run of matchups in the 115-pound ranks.
