Dembélé rested by PSG: hidden punishment or new Luis Enrique method?

Paris Saint-Germain announced Tuesday that Ousmane Dembélé would be rested until next Monday, meaning a week away from the squad for the French international, despite being declared fit to play. The decision comes days after the draw conceded at Rennes in Ligue 1’s opening match, when both Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were substituted at half-time.

“In agreement with the coach and sporting director, Ousmane Dembélé will benefit from a rest period over the coming days,” the club stated in a brief statement. A formulation that quickly sparked divergent interpretations in the sports media.

Luis Enrique had already set the tone immediately after the Rennes match, in a martial-sounding statement: “Paris Saint-Germain has won nothing, nothing. If you think about what you’ve won, you won’t win anything. You must show every day, every match, every training session, that you’re ready.” The message, difficult to misinterpret, immediately turned attention to the expected lineup for Friday’s trip to Lille.

It was in this context that commentator Daniel Riolo chose not to stick to the official version. “We can say things clearly by saying this is a heavy punishment,” he stated, adding that a Dembélé departure before the transfer window closes wouldn’t surprise him: “I wouldn’t fall out of my chair.” The argument rests notably on the fact that the player had completed specific preparation and was considered operational.

His colleague Walid Acherchour, however, offered a different reading, seeing instead the emergence of a new management philosophy from Luis Enrique, who might now occasionally grant rest periods to certain players during the season. Riolo ultimately aligned with this interpretation: “This could be a novelty in Luis Enrique’s management style, who is innovating with what he’s doing with Dembélé, who perfectly accepts the decision and will rest to return in top form.”

The reality of the situation — punishment, preventive management or a strong signal before a departure — should become clearer in the coming days, as the transfer window approaches its end and Dembélé is expected back Monday.
