Ousmane Dembélé answered Kylian Mbappé’s provocations in the most convincing manner: a brace and two assists to guide PSG to a 6-1 victory against Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday evening at Parc des Princes in the opening of the league phase of the Champions League. On Monday at a press conference, Mbappé had reminded everyone that he scores more goals than Dembélé and Raphinha, two players regularly cited for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

PSG did not allow the Slovak champions, managed by Yaya Touré, to settle into the match. Dembélé opened the scoring in the 17th minute by finishing off a Nuno Mendes shot that hit the post, before doubling the lead with a header on a cross from Dro Fernandez (23rd). He then set up Ferran Torres for the 3-0 with a left-footed cross (31st).

The other man of the match was the sole goalscorer in the 2026 World Cup final, author of a hat-trick. He scored his second goal following a run by Maghnes Akliouche (47th), then added a third with a knee finish from a Dembélé corner (57th), before leaving the pitch in the 64th minute. Warren Zaïre-Emery, Joao Neves, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué remained on the bench throughout the match.

Slovan reduced the deficit through Suleiman Camara, a native of Catalonia, who outpaced Illya Zabarnyi (58th). Fabian Ruiz sealed the final score at 6-1 with a powerful finish in added time (88th).

The European calendar of the double European champions will quickly become more complicated: PSG will face Manchester City and Barcelona within seven days in the heart of October, before meeting Villarreal, Roma, Aston Villa, Como and Galatasaray.
