Chelsea have struck a deal to sell Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for up to £51.7million, with an initial fee of £47.4m agreed and approximately £4.3m in add-ons. The paperwork is yet to be formally completed but is expected to be finalised within the week, with the 27-year-old set to join his new club after the World Cup.

The timing is striking: the agreement comes just days after Cucurella publicly praised new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, saying the Spaniard had “inspired a lot of confidence” in him and that the project at Stamford Bridge seemed “very interesting.” Cucurella had spoken to former Alonso players Alejandro Grimaldo and Borja Iglesias, both of whom spoke highly of the manager. He will now miss the chance to work under him.

Chelsea were not actively looking to sell the defender, but it is understood Cucurella was open to the right opportunity and keen to leave. Atletico Madrid had also registered interest in the Spain international, but Real Madrid moved faster to secure his signature.

The departure marks a significant loss on Chelsea’s original outlay. The club signed Cucurella from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022 for £63m, and he had only extended his contract last summer, leaving three years still to run. He made 150 appearances for the Blues, winning the Conference League and Club World Cup during his time at the club.

Alonso himself has a notable connection to Real Madrid, having managed the club for less than a year after arriving in May 2025. He left by mutual agreement in January 2026, the day after a 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa final, before taking the Chelsea job.

Cucurella is currently on international duty with Spain at the World Cup and had been deliberately vague about his future when asked by Spanish outlet Marca. “I’m not reading much and I’m not paying much attention,” he said. “I’m very happy where I am, and so is my family. Whatever happens, happens.” As it turns out, quite a lot has happened.
