Chelsea rebrand under-21s as Cobham Next Gen in move that infuriates supporters
Chelsea have renamed their under-19 and under-21 sides Cobham Next Gen (CNG) under BlueCo ownership, drawing widespread fan backlash over fears of the Americanisation of the club's academy identity.
Chelsea have renamed their under-19 and under-21 academy sides Cobham Next Gen (CNG), the club confirmed in an official statement, a decision that has provoked an immediate and angry reaction from supporters.
The rebranding, introduced under the club’s BlueCo ownership group, is intended to establish a distinct identity for the academy, which is based in Cobham, Surrey. The club argued the new name “more accurately reflects the age profile” of the players involved and honours Chelsea’s “long-standing heritage of developing the next generation of players for the senior game.”
“Cobham Next Gen also better fits the role of the squad within the academy,” the club said. “It recognises a group of young players with momentum, taking the next step in their development — the final one in the pathway to senior football — competing at a higher level as they continue their journey through Cobham towards the men’s team.”
The statement went further, describing the new identity as reflecting “the distinction of Chelsea’s academy as a unique footballing environment with its own history, culture and proven record of developing players for the highest level of the game.”
Fans were unconvinced. “Sounds like an eSports team,” one supporter wrote on social media. Another warned: “BlueCo have massively underestimated the UK-wide anti-sentiment of the franchising/Americanisation of our game.” A third offered a blunter verdict: “This is a really poor and crazy decision. The Club is CHELSEA Football Club.”
Cobham Next Gen will be led by head coach Harry Hudson in the 2026/27 season. Hudson was promoted to take charge of the under-21s last season after Calum McFarlane stepped up to serve as interim first-team manager between the tenures of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior. The under-21 side enjoyed a strong campaign, winning the Premier League 2 title by taking 14 of their 20 matches.
The rebrand arrives a day after reports emerged that Chelsea shareholders Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are in talks to sell their stakes in the club to majority owner Clearlake Capital, adding further uncertainty around the direction of the ownership structure at Stamford Bridge.
