Chelsea eye Alex Scott signing and £270m in sales to close a hectic transfer window

Chelsea are targeting a late swoop for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott while simultaneously working to raise upwards of £270m in player sales before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Having already committed roughly £350m to nine new arrivals — headlined by a club-record £117m deal for Morgan Rogers — Xabi Alonso’s side have shifted their focus sharply from buying to selling. With 39 senior players currently on the books, the club sit well above the Premier League’s 25-man registration cap and must trim the squad significantly within days.

The most consequential piece of business could yet be forced upon them. A late approach from Manchester City for Enzo Fernandez, reportedly valued at £120–130m, would leave Chelsea needing a ready-made replacement in central midfield. Scott, 23, has emerged as the preferred target, with the Blues said to have already had three bids rejected by Bournemouth. An offer in the region of £80m is believed to be the figure that could finally move the Cherries, and the arithmetic is appealing: selling Fernandez for up to £130m and reinvesting £80m in Scott would net Chelsea a profit of £40–50m while keeping Premier League quality in the engine room.

Tactically, Scott is considered well-suited to Alonso’s pressing-intensive system. His ability to absorb pressure, carry the ball through compact defensive lines, and recycle possession quickly mirrors the profile Chelsea are seeking to build around.

On the outgoing side, Liam Delap is reportedly close to joining Nottingham Forest for £45m plus £5m in add-ons, while Aston Villa are said to be in advanced discussions to sign Nicolas Jackson for £65m. Further sales of forward Marc Guiu and defender Tosin Adarabioyo — each valued at around £15m — would add to the total, with additional fees expected from loan exits elsewhere in the squad.

Goalkeeper cover is another area under scrutiny after Robert Sanchez’s difficult performance earlier this week intensified calls for reinforcement between the posts before the deadline.

Chelsea’s track record as efficient sellers in recent windows should provide some reassurance, but the scale of the task — clearing enough players to meet registration rules while simultaneously pursuing at least one significant signing — makes the final days of this window among the most consequential in the club’s recent history.
