Carvajal signs with Getafe after 13 years at Real Madrid and lengthy salary standoff
Free agent after departing Real Madrid, Dani Carvajal has officially joined Getafe on a one-year deal. Negotiations had stalled for several days due to a significant salary gap between the two clubs.
Dani Carvajal has found a new club. The Spanish right-back, a free agent following the end of his contract at Real Madrid after thirteen years with the Blancos, has committed to a one-year deal with Getafe, currently 14th in La Liga, as announced by the Madrid club on Tuesday.
Discussions between the two parties had nearly fallen through. The obstacle was financial: Getafe was offering Carvajal approximately €400,000 annually, roughly twenty-five times less than what he earned at Real Madrid. This gap had blocked negotiations for several days before an agreement was eventually reached.
At 34 years old, the Spanish international with 52 caps thus returns to La Liga in a radically different context from the one he experienced for over a decade at the Bernabéu. A six-time UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Carvajal is joining a struggling mid-table club, far removed from the European heights to which he had grown accustomed.
His departure from Real Madrid marked the end of an era for the merengue club, which made no effort to retain him at the end of his contract. This transfer to Getafe nonetheless allows him to extend his career in La Liga and bring his experience to a squad that sorely lacks it at this level.
