Carsley urges patience with Dowman as Arsenal teen targets Walcott's youngest-ever England record

England Under-21 head coach Lee Carsley has moved to manage expectations around Arsenal teenager Max Dowman, insisting the 16-year-old will follow the natural pathway through the age groups rather than leapfrog straight into the senior squad — even as Dowman remains in contention to break Theo Walcott’s record as England’s youngest-ever international.

Dowman made history last season by becoming the Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorer and has since attracted attention from senior manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of England’s four-match international window, which opens against Spain on Saturday. Despite that interest, Carsley confirmed Dowman is set to feature with the Under-19s on Friday, with a step up to the Under-21s viewed as the logical next move.

“It’s important players develop at their own pace,” Carsley said. “Max is an outstanding talent — the timing and the balance of when he comes to the Under-21s is inevitable. We have to be patient and make sure that ultimately we want them to play for the senior team for a prolonged period. So we have to make sure we get the time right. We had a similar issue a few years ago with Ethan Nwaneri.”

Carsley also confirmed that he and Tuchel are in regular dialogue over Dowman’s development. “Thomas and I speak regularly about squad selection and obviously Max is always in the conversation because of his talent,” he added.

The Under-21 boss, who has guided the Young Lions to successive European Championship titles, acknowledged that Wayne Rooney’s route — making his senior debut at 17 years and 111 days after skipping age groups — represents a rare exception rather than a template to follow.

Dowman does still have a window to make his own piece of history. He has until 30 March to surpass Walcott’s 20-year-old record as England’s youngest-ever senior international, set at 17 years and 75 days when Walcott was called up for the 2006 World Cup squad.

The Under-21 squad has also been bolstered this week after five senior players — including Declan Rice and Cole Palmer — withdrew from Tuchel’s group, potentially opening the door for several of Carsley’s players to earn promotions.
