Michael Carrick is operating under a clear timeline at Manchester United, with Gary Neville warning the manager he cannot afford to still be mired in mid-table come January — a position that would put his future in serious doubt.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League after seven games, closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places, following a run of six matches without a win in all competitions. Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds offered some encouragement, with Carrick calling it a “fresh start”, but the results must improve quickly.

Neville, speaking publicly, said: “Fifth [which will probably be enough for Champions League football] is a must for Michael Carrick to continue to grow and Manchester United continue to grow with investment. If they’re 13th in January, he’s got a problem because then you are what you are. Whereas I think it’s still early enough, seven points from seven games, to say, ‘Okay, still early in the season.’ You can’t say that after 15 games.”

The former United captain identified upcoming Premier League fixtures against Bournemouth and Chelsea as pivotal: “It has to change in the next few weeks: Bournemouth is really important and Chelsea away. And how he manages the games in between that.”

Off the pitch, attention has turned sharply to the January transfer window following Lisandro Martinez’s explosive television interview in which the Argentine defender criticised director of football Jason Wilcox over the club’s summer transfer business. Martinez has since apologised and returned to the starting line-up at Elland Road, but the episode has intensified scrutiny on United’s recruitment plans.

United are understood to be prioritising centre-backs and left-backs in January as part of an ongoing squad rebuild, having focused on midfield in the summer and attacking options the previous year. The failure to sign a left-back cover for Luke Shaw last summer was a source of frustration, with a move for Lewis Hall falling through after Newcastle United tied the full-back to a new long-term contract.

The push for defensive reinforcements raises questions about several senior players. Martinez, 26, is out of contract next summer and his position at the club looks uncertain following his public outburst. Harry Maguire, 33, is also entering the final months of his deal, meaning United could face significant defensive turnover heading into next season.
