Manchester United’s technical director Jason Wilcox is said to favour four other candidates over Julian Nagelsmann as the club’s hierarchy begins to map out potential successors to under-pressure head coach Michael Carrick. According to the Daily Mail, Wilcox wants a manager with Premier League experience, placing Eddie Howe, Fabian Hurzeler, Unai Emery and Antonio Conte ahead of the former Bayern Munich and Germany boss on his preferred shortlist.

The report points to a notable internal disagreement, with United’s director of recruitment Christopher Vivell pushing for Nagelsmann — a coach he championed during his time on Chelsea’s board. Despite Wilcox sitting above Vivell in the club’s chain of command, Nagelsmann’s appointment has not been ruled out entirely.

One factor working in Nagelsmann’s favour is his availability. The 39-year-old has been out of work since being relieved of the Germany job in the summer, meaning United would face no compensation costs to appoint him. The same applies to Howe and Conte, who departed Newcastle United and Napoli respectively without new roles. Brighton’s Hurzeler and Aston Villa’s Emery, by contrast, would require significant compensation packages that could complicate any approach.

Carrick’s position has come under mounting scrutiny following a run of poor results, most recently a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como. Despite that result, he remains in charge and will lead United into a Premier League fixture against Bournemouth. Should that winless run stretch to eight matches, the club’s stance on his future could shift rapidly.

The backdrop to the managerial speculation includes a reported dressing-room flashpoint after the Como defeat, with captain Bruno Fernandes and Carrick said to have clashed over tactical decisions during the game. The nature of that exchange has added to the sense of unease around the club.

United’s schedule offers little respite, with a trip to Chelsea and a home Champions League tie against AS Roma to follow the Bournemouth match. Defensive vulnerabilities in Europe have been a recurring theme, with opponents finding space to score early in each of their last two continental outings.
