Carlos Queiroz re-appointed Ghana manager just two months after World Cup resignation

Carlos Queiroz is back in charge of Ghana just two months after resigning as head coach, with the Ghanaian Football Association confirming his re-appointment and the former Manchester United assistant publicly embracing the return.

Queiroz had stepped down following Ghana’s elimination at the 2026 World Cup, where the Black Stars beat Panama, drew 0-0 with England and lost 2-1 to Croatia in the group stage before a 1-0 defeat to Colombia ended their tournament in the round of 32. Approximately 60 days after that exit, the GFA moved to bring the Mozambique-born coach back into the fold.

In an official statement, the GFA said: “The Ghana Football Association is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme. The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter.”

Queiroz, who served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United across two separate spells, was equally emphatic in his own statement confirming the news. “It is with immense pride and honour that I confirm my continuation as Head Coach of the Black Stars of Ghana,” he said. “Serving Ghana is far more than coaching a football team. It is a privilege, a responsibility and a mission to honour one of Africa’s greatest football nations.”

Looking ahead, Queiroz framed the Africa Cup of Nations as the immediate priority and a stepping stone toward the 2030 World Cup. “The Africa Cup of Nations is much more than our next destination — it is the golden gateway to building the Black Stars that will shine and proudly compete at the 2030 FIFA World Cup,” he added.

His second stint begins with a significant test: an AFCON qualifier against Ivory Coast. The stakes are heightened by Ghana’s failure to qualify for the most recent edition of the tournament, after being held to a draw by Angola in the qualifying campaign.

The four-time African Cup of Nations winners will be hoping Queiroz can restore their continental standing after a turbulent period, with the GFA indicating further details on the upcoming programme will be announced in due course.
