Joao Pedro ruled out for Chelsea's clash with Manchester United after thigh injury
Chelsea striker Joao Pedro will miss Saturday's Premier League home fixture against Manchester United — his third consecutive absence — after Xabi Alonso confirmed the Brazilian faces 'a few weeks' out with a thigh injury sustained in training.
Joao Pedro will play no part in Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with manager Xabi Alonso confirming the striker remains sidelined by a thigh injury picked up in training.
The Brazilian has already missed Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge and the midweek Carabao Cup fourth-round exit at Anfield, where Liverpool beat the Blues on penalties. Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off against United will be his third straight absence.
“He has an injury to his thigh and he is going to be out for a few weeks,” Alonso told reporters ahead of the Liverpool trip. “Let’s see how many. We don’t want to predict on that, but he is not ready for the next games.”
The precise timeline of Pedro’s return remains unclear. After the United fixture, Chelsea travel to Sunderland’s Stadium of Light before the November international break. Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has not called Pedro up for the Seleção’s friendlies against Japan and Singapore, making Chelsea’s home game against Leeds United on 21 November a realistic target for his comeback.
The stakes of his absence are already visible in the results. Chelsea have scored in all six Premier League matches Pedro has started this season — he has contributed five goals and three assists — but have been held scoreless in both league games without him, drawing a blank against Brentford and Spurs.
With Pedro unavailable against United, Alonso faces a familiar dilemma in attack. Veteran striker Danny Welbeck started the Brentford match but was used only as a late substitute against Spurs, with Alonso opting against fielding a natural centre-forward in that game.
Pedro joined Chelsea in the summer of 2025 and, despite the club finishing outside European qualification in his debut season, he ended the 2025/26 Premier League campaign with 15 goals — his best return in the top flight. He is already on course to surpass that tally in 2026/27, and Chelsea will be eager to have him back as quickly as possible.
