Porro signs new Spurs deal but admits returning to La Liga is 'a big dream'
Pedro Porro has opened up about his desire to return to Spain after helping Tottenham Hotspur to Europa League glory, despite having signed a new contract running until 2031 before the World Cup.
Pedro Porro has admitted that returning to La Liga is “a big dream” of his, even as he remains under contract at Tottenham Hotspur until the summer of 2031 with an option for a further year.
The 27-year-old right-back, speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, was candid about his long-term ambitions while being careful not to undermine his current club. “Obviously, I’d love to return to Spain someday. It’s my country, and I like the league,” he said. “Right now, it would be very unfair to talk about anything other than my club because I’m under contract, but obviously, I’d love to go back to Spain; it’s a big dream of mine.”
Porro signed his new deal before departing for the World Cup, where he played a key role as Spain lifted the trophy for the second time in their history, conceding just one goal throughout the tournament. He acknowledged the timing cost him financially. “I finalised my renewal before the World Cup to be at ease during the tournament, because that greatly influences performance,” he explained. “Afterwards, they gave me a great tribute; I feel very loved, and that’s very important to me. They’ve given me a good contract, although if I had waited until after the World Cup, I would have gotten more.”
On reported transfer interest during the summer, Porro suggested that enquiries never translated into genuine offers, hinting that Spurs’ valuation may have deterred suitors. “There were clubs that enquired about my situation, but there wasn’t any real interest,” he said. “Tottenham probably asked for a lot of money for me because they value me as one of the best.”
Porro was careful to avoid expressing a preference between Real Madrid and Barcelona, keeping his options open for any future move back to his homeland.
The Portuguese-based right-back joined Spurs three years ago after making permanent his loan spell at Sporting CP — having originally signed for Manchester City from Girona without making a senior appearance for the Premier League club. He has been one of Tottenham’s more consistent performers during an otherwise turbulent period at the club, playing the full 90 minutes in the 2025 Europa League final as Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0.
