Atlético Madrid came from behind to defeat Marseille 2-1 in a preseason friendly at the Orange Vélodrome on Friday, with Carlos Martín’s 78th-minute close-range finish deciding the contest after Rodrigo Mendoza had levelled before the break.

Igor Paixão gave Marseille the lead in the 22nd minute, but Atlético responded through Mendoza, who came off the bench to finish into the bottom-left corner in the 39th minute after an assist from Ademola Lookman. Martín then turned the game in Atlético’s favour, converting from close range with substitute Arnau Ortiz providing the assist.

Diego Simeone’s side started with a strong lineup that included Jan Oblak, Robin Le Normand, Dávid Hancko, Alejandro Grimaldo, Koke, Johnny Cardoso, Pablo Barrios, Lee Kang-In and Lookman. Atlético made extensive use of their squad throughout, with Dani Martínez, Obed Vargas, Morten Hjulmand, Marc Pubill, José María Giménez, Javier Boñar and Jorge Castillo all featuring.

Lookman had a blocked attempt before the interval and was caught offside during the match, while Jan Oblak was called into action in the second half, making saves from Amine Gouiri and Timothy Weah as Marseille pressed for an equaliser.

The match was a feisty affair, producing five yellow cards. Marseille’s Geoffrey Kondogbia, Leonardo Balerdi and Paixão were all booked, as were Atlético’s Le Normand and Giuliano Simeone.
