Canadian wildfire smoke triggers New York air quality warning days before World Cup final
New York City's air quality reached 'Very Unhealthy' levels on Thursday due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, raising concerns ahead of Sunday's World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Officials expect conditions to improve before the match.
New York City’s air quality deteriorated to ‘Very Unhealthy’ levels late on Thursday as smoke from hundreds of wildfires burning in Canada drifted south, casting an orange haze over the metropolitan area days before the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
The warning followed a midweek heat advisory and is part of a wider deterioration affecting major cities across the northeastern United States and Canada, including Toronto and Detroit. Despite the severity of the alert, there is no expectation at present that the final itself will be disrupted.
Officials are pointing to signs of improvement on Friday morning, with rain forecast on Saturday expected to clear the air further ahead of kick-off. The situation has already had a tangible impact on domestic football in the region. The National Women’s Soccer League match between Gotham FC and Washington Spirit went ahead on Wednesday night at Citi Field in Queens — in front of a record crowd — despite the smoky conditions. NWSL policy required players to take two mandatory breaks per half due to the air quality index.
The World Cup final will be the second to be staged in the United States and the first on the Eastern Seaboard, 32 years after Brazil and Italy met at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. World Cup 2026 has seen occasional weather-related delays during the group stage, though nothing of that kind is currently anticipated for the showpiece.
MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford has hosted seven matches at this tournament, beginning with the Group C fixture between Brazil and Morocco — a game officiated by final referee Slavko Vincic. Brazil, Senegal, France and Norway have all played there twice, but Sunday will mark the venue’s first appearance for both finalists.
Spain reached the final by beating France 2-0 in their semi-final on Tuesday. Argentina came from behind to defeat England 2-1 on Wednesday, booking their place in a third World Cup final in the last four tournaments as reigning world champions.
