Arsenal target Cardiff's Axel Donczew, the youngest player in Welsh club's history
Arsenal are reported to have strong interest in Cardiff City midfielder Axel Donczew, who made his debut at 15 years and 234 days last season to become the youngest player in the Welsh club's history. The move would see Donczew join the Gunners' academy set-up.
Arsenal are pursuing a deal for Cardiff City midfielder Axel Donczew, the youngest player ever to represent the Welsh club, according to The Telegraph. Donczew broke Cardiff’s record when he made his debut aged 15 years and 234 days last season, and has attracted strong interest from the North London side as Mikel Arteta continues to reshape his squad.
Should a deal be completed, Donczew would enter Arsenal’s academy with the prospect of first-team exposure further down the line. The Gunners have been increasingly active in recruiting elite young talent, having agreed a double deal last season for Ecuadorian brothers Edwin and Holger Quintero from Independiente del Valle — a move set to be formalised when the pair turn 18 in August 2027.
Arsenal have already been busy across the broader transfer market this summer. Defender Piero Hincapie has been signed permanently following a loan spell, while goalkeeper Ilian Meslier has joined to bolster the squad between the posts. A deal for Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis is also reported to be close to completion.
On the outgoing side, Leandro Trossard has left for Besiktas and Jakub Kiwior has joined Porto on a permanent basis.
Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy spoke warmly of Donczew after his debut last season, describing the occasion as “surreal” for the youngster and his family. “For Axel to come on and show real signs of what we’ve seen in training at such a young age,” Barry-Murphy said. “He’s very much a central player who can play inside in attacking midfield areas.”
Arsenal were also linked with Leicester City’s Jeremy Monga earlier this window, only to be beaten to his signature by Manchester City, underlining the competition among Premier League clubs for the most sought-after young talent in the country.
