Alexander-Arnold embraces Mourinho's intensity as Real Madrid preseason begins
Trent Alexander-Arnold has praised José Mourinho's high standards and demanding double sessions at Valdebebas, describing his first preseason under the Portuguese coach as intense but welcome after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has offered an enthusiastic early verdict on working under José Mourinho, telling Real Madrid’s official channel on July 16 that the Portuguese coach’s intensity and high expectations are exactly what he was hoping for as the squad works through double sessions at Valdebebas.
The England international is now entering his second season at the club after joining from Liverpool in summer 2025. He was candid about the physical demands of the opening days. “So far, so good. It’s hot and very intense. We’re in preseason, and that’s what we expected. There are a lot of tough sessions, a lot of double sessions, so it’s been intense so far,” he said.
Alexander-Arnold also made clear he had taken personal responsibility for his fitness levels before reporting back. “In the summer you have a couple of weeks off and then a couple of weeks getting back into running and regaining your fitness. Now, in preseason, you have to come back in shape. So I was ready and really looking forward to returning.”
Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu has been the defining story of Madrid’s summer, with the Portuguese coach beginning preparations with a reduced squad at Ciudad Real Madrid. Alexander-Arnold, who faced Mourinho’s sides as an opponent during his time at Liverpool, described the transition to working under him in straightforwardly positive terms.
“With Mourinho? Very good, very good. I’ve always admired the coach. I’ve played against him a couple of times and it’s a pleasure to work with him and his team. He’s intense. The principles and the level of expectation are very high, so I’m looking forward to seeing how, the more we get to know each other, the more we learn and the more he can teach us.”
The 26-year-old was direct about the collective ambition driving the squad’s approach to the new campaign. “We’re all willing and eager to learn and improve. I’m sure he’ll teach us a lot and help us win trophies this year.”
Alexander-Arnold also alluded to a significant period of inactivity before this training block, framing the preseason as a chance to rebuild his rhythm from the ground up. “I’ve been out of action for a long time, so it’s good to finally be back and lay a good foundation for a successful season,” he said, adding that understanding Mourinho’s tactical principles and how the team will set up is a key priority alongside regaining full fitness.
