Caelan Doris ruled out until January as knee infection delays Leinster captain's return

Caelan Doris will not return to action until at least early January after a knee infection set back the Leinster and Ireland captain’s recovery from surgery, The Irish Times has reported. The 28-year-old had been targeting a comeback for Ireland’s November Nations Championship tests but will now miss those fixtures entirely.

Doris originally injured his foot during Leinster’s United Rugby Championship final victory over the Bulls in June and subsequently underwent surgery on both the foot and knee. An infection in the knee has since slowed his rehabilitation, ruling him out beyond the Nations Championship window that includes Ireland’s home fixtures against Argentina, Fiji and South Africa, as well as the finals weekend at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.

The No. 8 had already been absent for Ireland’s southern hemisphere leg in July, when they faced Australia, Japan and New Zealand. His anticipated early-January return would place him in contention for Leinster’s final Champions Cup pool matches against Pau and Leicester, and potentially in time for the start of Ireland’s Six Nations campaign.

Leinster head coach Leo Cullen confirmed this week that there was no fresh update on Doris’s condition and that no official statement on the setback had been issued. The news arrives as Leinster prepare to face the Sharks in Durban, having opened their URC season with a 27-26 defeat to the Lions at Ellis Park.

The injury concerns at Leinster extend beyond Doris. Cormac Foley is gradually increasing his training load as he recovers from a calf injury, while Max Deegan and Harry Byrne will miss the Sharks fixture after sustaining concussions and entering the graduated return-to-play protocol. Josh Ericson is undergoing further assessment on a neck injury, and no updates were provided on Jack Boyle, RG Snyman, Paddy McCarthy, Jamison Gibson-Park, Jordan Larmour, Diarmuid Mangan or James Culhane.
