The Portuguese captain was filmed by a supporter departing the stadium alongside club personnel, moving gingerly and waving to fans before heading home. Fernandes had completed the full 90 minutes against the Azerbaijani side, showing no visible signs of discomfort during the match itself — a detail that suggests any issue may be minor.

United’s win was emphatic, with goals from Matheus Cunha, Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez securing a comfortable return to European football. Manager Michael Carrick described the result as the “perfect” Champions League comeback, though he acknowledged his side have work to do in the Premier League, where they have collected just four points from their opening three fixtures.

“We’re always pushing for more,” Carrick said after the final whistle. “Results-wise, it hasn’t been the start we wanted. We wanted to have more points in the league but performance-wise there’s a lot of things in there that we were looking for and we’ve been pleased with.”

Carrick also pointed to signs of progress within the squad. “There’s slightly different things happening in the team now that we probably didn’t have last season, in a good way, that we’re trying to get out of the players, and they’re showing that in a good way, so it’s really encouraging for me.”

United face Manchester City in the derby at Old Trafford this weekend, a fixture in which the captain’s influence is likely to be central to Carrick’s plans.
