Kai Rooney delivered his most emphatic performance yet for Manchester United’s academy on Tuesday, scoring four goals as the Under-18s thrashed Burnley 6-0 at the Clarets’ training centre in Lancashire. The 16-year-old now has five goals and an assist across just three appearances this season.
Rooney opened his account after 22 minutes when a Jaume Camacho header struck the upright and the ball rebounded to him, allowing the teenager to drive it hard and low into the bottom right corner with his left foot. He doubled his tally four minutes into the second half, coolly converting from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the area by Tambwe Leonard.
The hat-trick arrived in the 63rd minute via a looping header from a Jay McEvoy corner, and Rooney completed his four-goal haul just three minutes later, again finishing low into the bottom right corner from inside the box.
Camacho added a fifth with eight minutes remaining, firing into the top right corner, before Noah Ajayi rounded off the scoring in the 84th minute to make it 6-0.
The result offers a rare bright spot for United supporters enduring a difficult start to the senior season. Manager Michael Carrick has guided the first team to just one win from their opening eight Premier League matches, leaving the club 16th in the table, a single point above the relegation zone, and without a victory in their last eight games across all competitions.
For Rooney, operating from the right wing, the performance underlines a striker’s instinct that has drawn inevitable comparisons to his father Wayne. The academy’s depth of talent provides some encouragement for a fanbase currently focused on the struggles of the senior squad.
