Bristol sign Max Clark on short-term deal to cover injury-hit midfield

Bristol Bears have signed centre Max Clark on a short-term contract, bringing the 30-year-old back into top-flight rugby after he was among the players released by Newcastle at the end of last season.

Clark’s arrival is a direct response to a mounting injury and availability crisis in Bristol’s midfield. Benhard Janse van Rensburg, Tom Jordan and Matias Moroni are all unavailable for the opening Premiership Rugby Cup fixtures, having represented England, Scotland and Argentina respectively over the summer. Jack Bates has also picked up a minor injury, while Academy prospect Will Moore returned from England Under-18s’ tour to South Africa requiring shoulder surgery.

Clark brings considerable experience to Ashton Gate. He made more than 100 appearances across a decade at Bath after coming through their Academy, and has since represented the Dragons, Cardiff, Saracens and Newcastle.

Bears director of rugby Pat Lam said the signing was a pragmatic response to the club’s short-term needs. “Max is an experienced, proven player who gives us important cover in the midfield during this first block of PREM Cup fixtures,” Lam said. “With the number of midfield players unavailable for PREM Cup selection, we wanted to add some experienced cover to the group while also ensuring we can manage our squad effectively through this opening period.”

Lam highlighted Clark’s physicality as a key factor in the decision. “Max is a strong defender and physical ball carrier and brings a lot of experience to the group. He’s fitted into the environment really well and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact he can make over the coming weeks.”

Clark, for his part, expressed relief at returning to action. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to join the Bears on a short-term deal,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting stuck in immediately and adding to this already very tight and talented group.”
