Injury-ravaged Stormers sign double World Cup winner Mbonambi from Sharks
Bongi Mbonambi has rejoined the Stormers on a one-year deal after his contract with the Sharks was terminated following a disciplinary dispute. The double World Cup winner is available immediately as Cape Town's hooker stocks are decimated by injury and suspension.
Bongi Mbonambi has returned to the Stormers on a one-year deal, with the double World Cup winner set to make an immediate impact as Cape Town’s hooker depth reaches crisis point.
The Springbok hooker’s contract with the Sharks was terminated by mutual agreement following a disciplinary dispute, freeing him to rejoin the club where he made 74 appearances between 2015 and 2021. Mbonambi is available for selection straight away and is in line to feature in the Stormers’ United Rugby Championship clash with Ulster at DHL Stadium on Saturday.
The urgency of the move reflects the scale of the Stormers’ problems at hooker. André-Hugo Venter, Deon Fourie, Lukhanyo Vokozela, Almero Keizer and Luca Bakkes are all currently injured, while JJ Kotzé is serving a suspension — leaving the squad dangerously short of options in the middle of the front row.
Director of Rugby John Dobson moved quickly to secure the deal and made no secret of his relief at getting it done. “We all know the quality that Bongi brings and it is fantastic that we were able to arrange this deal at such short notice. We are grateful to both Bongi and the Sharks for helping to make this happen,” Dobson said.
“Bongi became a Springbok while playing for us and has proven himself among the best in the world in the middle of the front row. We have been hit hard with both injuries and suspension to our hookers, so we are delighted to welcome Bongi back to the fold.”
Mbonambi, who has won the Rugby World Cup twice with South Africa, expressed enthusiasm about returning to familiar surroundings. “I spent many incredible years playing for the DHL Stormers, so to be back in Cape Town surrounded by so many people I know and respect is fantastic,” he said. “This club is in a great space and I want to do all I can to contribute to the cause.”
