Russell demands Scotland end near-misses as 100th cap and World Cup loom
Finn Russell has called on Scotland to convert promising performances into wins as they target silverware across three tournaments in the next 12 months, with the Bath fly-half closing in on his 100th international cap.
Finn Russell has urged Scotland to stop collecting near-miss stories and start winning tournaments, with the 95-cap fly-half eyeing a landmark century of appearances as his country enters the most consequential 12-month stretch of his international career.
The Bath stand-off, who made his Scotland debut in 2014, has never won a major tournament with his country. He believes that could change across three competitions — the Nations Championship, the Six Nations, and the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia — that fall in quick succession.
“There’s three competitions over the next 12 months,” Russell said on Wednesday. “I think that’s amazing to have the opportunity three times to potentially win something. Since I’ve been with Scotland we’ve never won anything, in terms of tournaments, so I think you’d have the chance to do that.”
Scotland currently sit second in the northern hemisphere table of the Nations Championship and face three tough matches before the finals weekend. An encouraging run of results in 2026 has lifted them to sixth in the world rankings, but Russell was candid about the gap that still exists between promising displays and decisive victories.
He pointed to Scotland’s 42-28 defeat away to South Africa in July as a case in point — a performance full of quality that still ended in a loss. “That was a game that we had enough chances where we definitely should have won,” he said. “So there’s a lot of positives there but at the same time there’s a lot that we need to work on.”
Consistency is the central theme for Russell. Scotland’s Six Nations campaign this year illustrated the problem starkly: a big win over France followed almost immediately by a defeat to Ireland. “We can’t go off a big win against France to then losing to Ireland like we did in the Six Nations,” he said. “We need to be stacking these wins one on top of the next. We need to be winning these games back to back to challenge to win tournaments.”
On a personal milestone, Russell is five caps away from joining the exclusive group of Scotland centurions. He is on course to reach 100 during next year’s Six Nations, though he is deliberately keeping the target at arm’s length. “It’s definitely something that’s there in the back of my mind but if I think about it too much I probably won’t get it,” he said. “I’m just looking to stay fit, play well and see what happens.”
