Brener returns from 13-month layoff vowing to knock out Harrell at UFC Vegas 121

Elves Brener steps back into the octagon at UFC Vegas 121 on Saturday at the UFC Apex, ending a 13-month layoff with a lightweight bout against Josiah Harrell and a clear intention to finish the fight.

Brener’s absence followed three consecutive defeats — against Myktybek Orolbai, Joel Alvarez, and Esteban Ribovics — in just over a year of hard-fought bouts. The Chute Boxe product said he used the time away to rest both body and mind, and believes the reset has made him a more complete fighter.

“I’m much more complete than I was before,” Brener told MMA Fighting. “I don’t focus on the next guy I’m going to fight, I focus on my game, my game plan. The fight never stops. Fighting is so interesting because you’re always learning.”

Harrell arrives at UFC Vegas 121 having suffered the first loss of his MMA career in February — a first-round knockout at the hands of Jacobe Smith at welterweight. Saturday will also mark his first lightweight appearance in nearly four years, having competed at 170 pounds for a 5-1 regional record before his UFC debut.

Brener expects that weight-class transition to take a toll. He noted that he himself is walking around at 178 pounds five weeks out from the fight — a significant improvement on the 205-pound walk-around weight he carried between bouts earlier in his career.

“He’s a strong guy who’s coming down from 170 to 155, but he’s going to see that 155 is a different story, a different division,” Brener said. “The suffering he’s going to go through to make 155, I’m sure it’s going to be a lot. I just hope he shows up on fight day, to be honest with you.”

On the fight itself, Brener is not planning to leave the result to the judges. He described a willingness to brawl, scramble, or submit Harrell — whatever the contest demands — and expressed full confidence in his finishing ability.

“Either I’m going to knock this guy out, or I’m going to submit him,” he said. “I know I have the touch of death. Wherever I touch, I know I can shut someone off, and I’m going in there to do that in the fight.”
