Benched at Barcelona and with France, Koundé accepts the challenge and vows to bounce back
Started only twice in La Liga this season and overtaken by Pierre Kalulu in the France squad, Jules Koundé acknowledged in a press conference that his demotion is a direct consequence of a season below his standards.
Jules Koundé is going through the most difficult period of his career: the FC Barcelona defender has started only twice in La Liga this season and has just spent three consecutive league matches on the bench, replaced by Eric Garcia in the starting lineup.
The situation is identical with the France national team. Called up by Zinédine Zidane, Koundé started the match in Turkey but then lost his starting place in the following two matches. Pierre Kalulu, convincing in the right-back role, is now establishing himself as a serious alternative in the Blues’ defence.
Facing the media in a press conference, the former Bordeaux player chose honesty over complaint. “I feel very good physically. These are my coach’s choices. If I have less playing time, it’s linked to last season which was well below my standards. It’s a consequence and a challenge I willingly accept. It’s up to me to rediscover my best form,” he said.
Less than two years ago, Koundé was among Europe’s best right-backs. His ability to return to that level will determine his place at both Barcelona and in the national team in the coming months.
