Medhi Benatia has found his next role: two months after leaving his position as director of football at Olympique de Marseille, the former central defender (39) will join a team of television consultants to cover notably European nights.

Benatia, who trained at OM before playing for Bayern Munich and Juventus Turin, will reunite on set with his friend Samir Nasri, with whom he shared his formative years at Marseille. The two men are announced as consultants on shows dedicated to the UEFA Champions League and football in general, alongside presenter Hervé Mathoux.

The former Marseille executive is not known for mincing words. Last August, in an interview with France Football, he delivered an unsparing assessment of his time at OM, stating that “mediocrity is unfortunately deeply rooted” at the club. Throughout the past season, he had also not spared Olympique players in his public statements.

This outspoken approach should fuel debate on the sets. Benatia is not the only new recruit announced: former Morocco coach Walid Regragui, who led the Atlas Lions to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, is also joining the broadcast.
