BBC denies plans to cut Norwich City away coverage on Radio Norfolk after public backlash

The BBC has moved to quash claims it was planning to cut away match commentary for Norwich City on BBC Radio Norfolk, issuing a firm denial after a wave of high-profile criticism erupted on social media.

A report from the Norwich Evening News had suggested that BBC bosses were considering scaling back local radio coverage of Norwich’s away fixtures, meaning commentator Chris Goreham would only attend home matches. The story prompted swift condemnation from prominent media figures, including ITV presenters Mark Pougatch and Ed Balls.

Pougatch was unequivocal in his response. “I am proud to say I started my career in local radio,” he wrote on social media. “This would be an absolute disgrace if true. Where do I sign the petition? Local football coverage is EXACTLY the sort of thing the BBC should do. No one else will!”

Former Cabinet Minister and Good Morning Britain presenter Balls also weighed in, adding his voice to the growing chorus of opposition.

Currently, BBC Radio Norfolk sends both Goreham and Rob Butler to matches, alongside a former Norwich player based near the venue. A BBC insider had already denied any changes were imminent before the corporation issued a formal statement.

“This is not true,” the BBC said. “Home and away game commentary, analysis and coverage will continue at BBC Radio Norfolk. We are looking at ways to reduce duplication and showcase more of our local commentary teams across the BBC, but no decisions have been made. Any updates will be announced in due course.”

The original report had suggested the cuts were part of a broader effort to save millions of pounds over the next two years, with Norwich supporters potentially left relying on commentary from the home side’s local BBC station for away fixtures.

Norwich, who opened their Championship campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to West Brom, travel to Millwall on Saturday for a 12:30pm kick-off.
