Global coalition of supporters demands Infantino's resignation and FIFA reform
Supporter organizations representing hundreds of millions of fans across all continents launched an international petition Thursday calling for Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president and for a sweeping overhaul of the governance of world football's governing body.
Supporter organizations from around the world launched an international petition Thursday demanding the resignation of Gianni Infantino from the FIFA presidency and structural reform of the governing body of world football.
The coalition, which says it represents hundreds of millions of fans across all continents, makes a blunt demand: “Gianni Infantino must go and FIFA must be reformed in depth so that such a fiasco can never happen again.” The petition text points to an accumulation of grievances: concentration of power at the top of the presidency, opaque decision-making, cronyism, a cult of personality, and lack of checks and balances.
“Presiding over FIFA is a function that rests on trust. That trust is now irretrievably broken,” write the signatories, who argue that Infantino “is not capable of exercising this responsibility in accordance with the principles of democratic governance.”
The Italian-Swiss executive has been under pressure for several months. The management of the 2026 World Cup has crystallized tensions, as has his controversial project to open the competition’s capital to private investors — an initiative that has sparked strong opposition within the international football movement.
This petition represents the most coordinated manifestation to date of supporter distrust toward FIFA leadership. It comes at a time when several federations and professional football actors have also expressed reservations about the direction taken by the governing body under Infantino’s presidency, in office since 2016.
