Vincent Kompany is stable in hospital after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground on Friday, with club chief Max Eberl confirming the manager faces weeks away from the sidelines while medics investigate the cause.

Eberl addressed the media on Saturday, revealing he had spoken with both Kompany and his wife following the incident. “The good news is: He’s stable,” Eberl said. “He collapsed on the pitch yesterday and will have to stay in the hospital for a few more days until everything has been checked and verified. This once again shows that health is the most important thing in life — not football.”

The Bayern chief was careful not to set a specific return date but made clear the absence would be measured in weeks rather than days. “We need to figure out what it is, and then we’ll discuss what recovery time means,” he said. “We won’t be talking about days, but weeks. Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We’re not starting to build any timeframes.”

Kompany, the former Manchester City captain who took charge at Bayern in the summer of 2024, had been watching the club’s reserve team train when he collapsed and was taken to hospital. The 38-year-old had already been dealing with a virus in the days prior, which had caused him to miss the pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League draw with Arsenal.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks, who will oversee first-team operations in Kompany’s absence, said he visited the manager in hospital but kept the conversation away from football. “I explained to him that we would be having no football conversations,” Danks said. “It was just checking in on his health and making sure he’s OK. All the football operations are in our hands and we’ll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward.”

Eberl moved to reassure supporters that the coaching structure at Bayern remains intact. “There’s absolutely no thought of changing anything,” he said. “All the guys who are here are outstanding — and therefore we can all approach the next few weeks in the spirit of Vinnie.”
