Carrick under mounting pressure as Fernandes clash deepens United's crisis
Michael Carrick faces a defining moment as Manchester United prepare to face Bournemouth without a win in seven games, with Bruno Fernandes publicly criticising the manager's tactics after their latest defeat.
Michael Carrick heads into Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth on Sunday having failed to win any of his last seven matches across all competitions, with the pressure at Old Trafford intensifying following a very public falling-out with club captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes was seen shaking his head in frustration as he was substituted for Joshua Zirkzee during Wednesday’s defeat at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. The Portuguese playmaker then went further, publicly criticising Carrick’s tactical approach in the post-match aftermath. Carrick hit back, stating that his system breaks down when players do not cover enough ground — a pointed response that has done little to ease tensions within the squad.
The 45-year-old has sought guidance from two of United’s most celebrated figures as he fights to save his position, revealing he remains in regular contact with Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “I speak to both of them quite regularly, to be honest,” Carrick said. “I’m close to both of them and we do have regular conversations.”
Despite that, speculation over his successor continues to grow, with Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte both mentioned as candidates should the club’s hierarchy decide to make a change.
Adding to the uncertainty surrounding the club’s direction, 16-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel remains the subject of interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. The teenager, whose close control and eye for goal have drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi, made clear in September that he is open to exploring opportunities elsewhere. Losing Gabriel to a rival European club would represent a significant setback for United’s long-term development plans.
Sunday’s home fixture against Bournemouth is shaping up as a pivotal moment for Carrick, with the club’s leadership expected to assess his position based on the result.
