Carrick faces dressing room unrest as Fernandes feud deepens ahead of Bournemouth clash
Michael Carrick is under mounting pressure at Manchester United after seven games without a win, with captain Bruno Fernandes publicly criticising the manager's tactics following Wednesday's Champions League defeat to Como.
Michael Carrick heads into Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth with his Manchester United future increasingly in doubt, having overseen seven consecutive games without a victory across all competitions.
The tension boiled over publicly after Wednesday’s Champions League loss to Como at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, where club captain Bruno Fernandes was visibly frustrated as he was substituted for Joshua Zirkzee. Fernandes subsequently criticised Carrick’s tactical approach in post-match comments, prompting the United manager to respond with pointed remarks of his own — insisting his system cannot function when players fail to cover sufficient ground.
Carrick, 45, has revealed he is leaning on two of Old Trafford’s most celebrated figures for support, holding regular conversations with both Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “I speak to both of them quite regularly, to be honest,” he said. “I’m close to both of them and we do have regular conversations.”
Despite that backing, speculation over his future continues to grow. Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte have been identified as potential replacements should the Old Trafford hierarchy decide to act in the coming weeks, with Sunday’s result against the Cherries widely viewed as a significant moment in determining Carrick’s fate.
Off the pitch, United face a separate concern in the academy. Sixteen-year-old JJ Gabriel, regarded as one of the club’s most gifted youth prospects and drawing comparisons to Lionel Messi for his close control and eye for goal, has attracted interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Gabriel indicated in September that he is open to exploring opportunities elsewhere, raising the prospect of United losing one of their most coveted young talents to a rival European club.
The combination of first-team discord, managerial uncertainty, and potential academy losses leaves United navigating one of their most turbulent periods in recent memory, with Sunday’s home fixture against Bournemouth offering Carrick a chance — perhaps a final one — to begin reversing the club’s fortunes.
