Barcola to Liverpool for €140M, historic record for Ligue 1 player

Bradley Barcola is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain for Liverpool for approximately €140 million, plus around €25 million in bonuses. If the figures circulating since Thursday are confirmed, the French international would become the most expensive player ever sold by a Ligue 1 club to a foreign team.

Journalist Robin Bairner described Barcola as “the most expensive substitute in history,” a provocative phrase but not entirely unfounded. The 22-year-old winger started on the bench in both Champions League finals played by PSG, and with the France national team, he shares the left flank with Désiré Doué, never establishing himself as an undisputed starter.

This substitute label deserves to be nuanced, however. Barcola was one of the most-used players by Luis Enrique last season, accumulating minutes in a dense Paris squad. A second-choice starter rather than a mere substitute, he had an impact in every match in which he played.

Financially, the amount is nothing aberrant given current market standards. English clubs have written multiple checks for €80 and €100 million this summer, and PSG also used the transfer of Yan Diomandé to Real Madrid, completed at €125 million, as a reference point. At €140 million, Barcola fits into the inflationary logic of a summer transfer market where values are spiraling, driven notably by the financial power of the Premier League.
