Barcelona withdraw from Álvarez pursuit after Atlético's tapping-up complaint to FIFA
Barcelona have abandoned their bid to sign Julián Álvarez after Atlético Madrid filed a formal complaint over alleged unauthorised contact with the Argentine forward's representatives. With Arsenal's interest also cooling, Álvarez is now set to remain at Atlético under Diego Simeone.
Barcelona have walked away from their pursuit of Julián Álvarez after Atlético Madrid lodged a formal complaint with the Royal Spanish Football Federation and approached FIFA over alleged unauthorised contact with the Argentine’s representatives, according to beIN Sports. The Catalan club concluded that conditions no longer existed to complete a deal, leaving Álvarez on course to stay at Atlético under Diego Simeone.
How the saga unravelled
Álvarez had made clear his desire to play for Barcelona, but Atlético consistently refused to negotiate with a direct domestic rival. That stance alone was enough to stall talks, but the situation hardened further when Atlético accused Barcelona of attempting to destabilise their striker through alleged tapping-up. An investigation into those allegations is underway, with both clubs expected to present their version of events to the relevant authorities.
Facing the prospect of further regulatory escalation, Barcelona chose to end all negotiations. Atlético have since reiterated that they will not entertain any offer from Barcelona, regardless of the fee.
Álvarez already back in Atlético’s programme
Despite the summer of speculation, Álvarez has already begun following Atlético’s individualised training programme for international players ahead of officially joining preseason. He is still completing the final days of his vacation but is on a personalised fitness plan and remains in contact with the club, with his return expected on schedule.
Barcelona’s urgency eased by Gordon signing
Part of Barcelona’s calculation in stepping back was that the pressure to sign a forward had diminished. The club considers itself well covered in attack following the arrival of Anthony Gordon, reducing the imperative to force through a move beIN Sports described as virtually impossible.
Arsenal’s interest has also faded
With Barcelona out of the picture, the international market offers Álvarez few immediate exit routes. Arsenal, previously heavily linked with the World Cup winner, have also lost momentum in their pursuit, further reducing the threat to Atlético’s plans.
Atlético do acknowledge that a substantial offer from elsewhere in the Premier League could still test their resolve before the transfer window closes. For now, however, retaining one of their most important players is the priority, and Álvarez appears ready to draw a line under a turbulent summer and refocus on the pitch.
