Trent Alexander-Arnold has addressed the backlash he received from Liverpool supporters after leaving his boyhood club for Real Madrid on a free transfer in June 2025, saying the experience was painful but one he could rationalise.

The right-back, who spent two decades at Anfield and was central to Liverpool’s most successful era in recent memory, was booed during a home match against Arsenal in May 2025 — his first appearance after confirming his imminent departure. A mural of him near the ground was later defaced with the word “rat” on multiple occasions.

“The booing and disappointment from Liverpool supporters is something I’m absolutely able to shoulder,” Alexander-Arnold told the Mirror. “I can understand it, in my own way. I heard a lot during that period that Liverpool fans didn’t want to be told how to feel or think, and I agree. But I hope one day there’ll be a degree of understanding about the decisions I wanted to make around my own life.”

He was equally candid about the emotional toll. “It hurts because of how much I’ve put into the club over the course of 20 years and the sacrifices I made for the club during that period. So of course it hurts, but I understand the disappointment. I even understand anger expressed through booing.”

Alexander-Arnold returned to Anfield as a Real Madrid player for a Champions League fixture last November, a game Liverpool won 1-0. He described the day as difficult to process, noting that he had never previously set foot in the away dressing room despite his long association with the stadium.

“Going back to Liverpool after everything that’s happened, it was on my mind,” he said. “If I’m honest, if something affects me and upsets me, it shows in my family as well. They are in it with me… we’re together.”

The 26-year-old drew a clear distinction between the reaction inside the ground and the abuse directed at him online. “Abuse online and threats made via social DMs or in other ways are a sad part of life in 2026 if you’re in the public eye,” he said. “I choose to keep those things away from me because they don’t feel real. I can rationalise that by knowing it’s not representative of a football club I love, LFC, and it’s not representative of my home city.”

Despite the hostility from sections of the fanbase, Alexander-Arnold said recent visits back to Liverpool had reassured him that he remains welcome in the city he grew up in.
