FC Barcelona is set to officially announce the arrival of 16-year-old central defender Mikael Baza from Hamburg, according to Mundo Deportivo. The player has already arrived in Catalonia and is due to sign a contract running through 2029 on Tuesday for a total amount under €250,000.

Standing 1.93 m tall, Baza will initially join Barcelona’s U19 squad, with prospects of progressing to the first team. This signing comes in the final hours of the summer transfer window, as the Catalan club also finalizes the arrival of Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal for approximately €11 million.

Baza’s signing was reportedly initiated directly by Hansi Flick. The German manager has been following the young defender since his involvement with German youth national teams, which he worked with during his tenure as Mannschaft head coach between 2021 and 2023. A personal connection further strengthens this deal: Baza is the cousin of Jonathan Tah, the Bayern Munich defender, though this family tie obviously provides no sporting guarantee in itself.

With this double recruitment, Barcelona closes an active summer transfer window on two very different fronts: an experienced striker seeking a fresh start and an adolescent defender with strong potential, both brought in by Flick’s vision.
