Barcelona agree €10m deal for Gabriel Jesus after Atlético block Álvarez move

Barcelona have agreed a deal with Arsenal to sign striker Gabriel Jesus for a reported fee of €10m plus add-ons, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the Brazilian due to undergo a medical in Spain before the transfer is finalised.

The move represents a significant pivot in Barcelona’s summer striker search. The club spent much of the window pursuing Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, only for their La Liga rivals to make clear they would not sell the Argentine to a direct competitor. Álvarez returned to training with Atlético on Sunday, with reports indicating he had accepted he would remain at the club under Diego Simeone for the time being.

Jesus has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal, sitting behind both Kai Havertz and summer signing Viktor Gyökeres in Mikel Arteta’s forward line. Arteta was asked this week about the futures of Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli, and hinted that both players could depart, though his comments centred more directly on Martinelli than on Jesus himself. He acknowledged that difficult conversations can be necessary and stressed that any outcome would be agreed collectively.

The reported agreement would make Jesus the third attacking addition of Barcelona’s summer window, following the surprise arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi earlier in the transfer period. The club has been active in reshaping its forward options despite ongoing financial constraints.

For Arsenal, the sale would represent a tidy return on a player who has struggled with injuries and form since joining from Manchester City in 2022. Jesus has made a limited impact at the Emirates, and with Gyökeres now in north London, his path to regular first-team football appeared increasingly narrow.
