Arsenal reach €150m swap agreement with Atlético for Julian Álvarez, reports claim

Arsenal have reached a preliminary agreement with Atlético Madrid to sign Julián Álvarez in a deal worth €150m plus striker Viktor Gyökeres heading to Spain, according to Spanish publication AS, as cited by Sport Witness. The reported breakthrough comes with the summer transfer window set to close next week and Álvarez’s relationship with Atlético supporters having deteriorated sharply.

Álvarez was booed and whistled at the Metropolitano after publicly declaring it was his “dream” to leave the club, leaving Atlético in an awkward position. While Barcelona have expressed interest in the Argentine World Cup winner, Atlético have refused to negotiate with their La Liga rivals, and a release clause set at over £400m makes any unsanctioned approach a non-starter. That stance has effectively left Arsenal as the only realistic destination for Álvarez this summer, and AS reports he is “starting to see” that reality.

Arsenal had previously been quoted a fee of £128m for the 25-year-old, who is valued at €120m by Transfermarkt. The reported €150m structure — with Gyökeres moving in the opposite direction — represents a significant escalation, and the key remaining obstacle is a personal agreement with Álvarez himself. His preference has consistently been a move to Barcelona, and manager Mikel Arteta reportedly spoke to him directly earlier in the summer in an attempt to change his mind.

Gyökeres, who was Arsenal’s top scorer across all competitions last season as the club won the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final, has had a difficult start to the new campaign. The Sweden international did not come off the bench in Arsenal’s opening league fixture against Coventry City, his former club, and has faced criticism over the all-round nature of his game.

The potential arrival of Álvarez would give Arteta a versatile attacking option capable of playing on the left flank or through the middle, a role that may become more pressing with Gabriel Martinelli closing in on a move to Saudi side Al Hilal.
