Andy Robertson has joined Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool when his contract at Anfield expired, making the Scotland captain Roberto De Zerbi’s first signing as Spurs head coach.

Robertson, 31, had been linked with a move to Spurs in January after falling behind Milos Kerkez in Arne Slot’s left-back pecking order at Liverpool, but the transfer did not materialise at that stage. He now arrives in north London on a permanent basis after nine years at Anfield, during which he won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

De Zerbi, appointed Tottenham manager this summer, was unambiguous in his enthusiasm for the deal. “Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” the Italian said. “He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”

The signing signals Tottenham’s intent to reshape their squad under De Zerbi, with Robertson’s experience at the elite level seen as central to that project. Having made more than 350 appearances for Liverpool and captained Scotland for several years, Robertson brings a profile that extends well beyond a straightforward free-transfer acquisition.

Further details of the contract length and squad number are expected to follow.
