Álvarez jeered and isolated as 10-man Atlético squander lead to draw with Villarreal

Julián Álvarez was jeered by his own supporters and left the pitch alone at full time as Atlético Madrid dropped points in a 2-2 draw against Villarreal at the Metropolitano on Sunday, with Robin Le Normand’s red card and a glaring lack of attacking threat exposing the structural problems at the club.

Two penalties and a red card shape a chaotic afternoon

Marc Pubill gave Atlético the lead with a curled finish in the 59th minute, but Morten Hjulmand’s foul on Tajon Buchanan handed Villarreal an equaliser from the spot, which Gerard Moreno converted. Le Normand was then dismissed following a VAR review, and Georges Mikautadze punished the numerical disadvantage by converting the resulting penalty to put the visitors 2-1 up. Giuliano Simeone rescued a point in the 85th minute, finishing off an Álex Baena through ball, but the damage to confidence and perception had already been done.

Villarreal were comfortably the sharper side for long stretches. Sofascore credited the visitors with 3.60 expected goals to Atlético’s 0.71 across the game — a gulf that Jan Oblak did much to narrow with four saves.

The Álvarez situation reaches a breaking point

Álvarez was met with jeers from the moment his name was read out before kick-off and again when he came on as a second-half substitute, managing just 12 touches and creating no chances in roughly half an hour on the pitch. Supporters have begun chanting for him to leave the club, and at full time he walked straight down the tunnel rather than join his teammates in applauding the crowd. Diego Simeone later explained that the club itself had decided to keep Álvarez away from the stands.

The problem, however, runs deeper than one player’s mood. Atlético had little genuine presence in the box even before factoring in Álvarez’s situation. Lee Kang-in was deployed as a creator rather than a finisher, while Ademola Lookman remained miscast as a centre-forward despite a promising pre-season.

Simeone admits the forward setup is broken

Simeone took direct ownership of the attacking structure after the final whistle, apologising to Lookman for playing him out of position and stating plainly that winning titles requires proper forwards. With Alexander Sørloth sidelined again and the transfer window closing soon, finding a reliable centre-forward — whether by reintegrating Álvarez or signing a replacement — has become the club’s most pressing task.

The draw follows a more comfortable opening-day win over Málaga and leaves Atlético unbeaten through two La Liga fixtures, but Sunday’s performance did little to quiet the growing uncertainty around Álvarez’s future at the club.
