Alan Shearer’s long-standing relief at keeping footballers out of the family has been doubled in a single year, with both of his daughters marrying rugby players in 2025.

Hollie Shearer, 31, married England rugby union centre Joe Marchant, 30, in July. The couple had gone public with their relationship in 2022, prompting the Newcastle United legend to quip on social media that he was “just glad it’s not a footballer.” Marchant, who recently left Stade Français to join Sale Sharks, has since relocated back to England with Hollie.

Last weekend, Hollie’s older sister Chloe, 34, followed suit, marrying former Newcastle Falcons flanker Micky Young, 37, at a lavish ceremony in the North Yorkshire countryside. The couple had been linked since 2024 and became engaged last November after Young proposed at Wylam Brewery. Chloe wore an elegant lace dress for the occasion.

Shearer, who has been married to wife Lainya for 35 years, was front and centre at Chloe’s wedding and shared photographs on Instagram with the caption: “Another weekend. Another daughter’s wedding!!! Stunning @chloeshearer1 congratulations Mr & Mrs Young.” Former Newcastle team-mates Steve Harper and Rob Lee were also among the guests.

The Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer had previously been candid about his reservations regarding his daughters dating professional footballers, making the double rugby outcome something of a running family joke brought to life.

Off the pitch, Shearer’s boyhood club Newcastle have endured a turbulent summer, losing Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimarães and manager Eddie Howe. Under new head coach Matthias Jaissle, the Magpies have made a measured start to the season, collecting two wins, two draws and one defeat from their opening five league games to sit ninth in the table.
