McConnell's lineout masterclass steals the show as Edinburgh edge Stormers 17-13
Edinburgh flanker Liam McConnell dismantled the Stormers' lineout with a display his head coach called 'world-class', helping Edinburgh to a 17-13 URC win at Hive Stadium and strengthening his case for Scotland's Nations Championship squad.
Liam McConnell delivered one of the standout individual performances of the URC season so far as Edinburgh defeated the Stormers 17-13 at Hive Stadium on Friday, with the 22-year-old flanker tearing apart one of the most feared lineout operations in southern-hemisphere rugby.
The result keeps Edinburgh’s winning start to the URC campaign intact, following their opening victory at Ulster, and was watched by Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend and forwards coach John Dalziel — both present to assess McConnell’s readiness ahead of Scotland’s Nations Championship fixture against New Zealand next month.
The Stormers arrived with a formidable set-piece reputation, but between the 25th and 40th minutes they lost seven of their eight lineout throws. Lock Glen Young claimed the first, before McConnell took over as the primary disruptor, stealing three of the Cape Town side’s throws. The pressure on Stormers hooker Vernon Paulo — an early replacement for Ntuthuko Mchunu — was relentless; he was penalised twice for not throwing straight, and the visitors were also cited for men leaving the lineout prematurely as their driving maul repeatedly stalled.
“The Stormers posed a massive set-piece threat and with the pack they have, they tend to dominate opposition,” said Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt. “We knew we had to try and disrupt them at source and if we were able to contain that and put phases of play together, we would have them in trouble.”
Everitt was unequivocal in his praise for McConnell. “Liam McConnell contesting the lineout was world-class and we prepared really well for that during the week. We destroyed their set-piece. They couldn’t get going or get momentum from that. They even went for poles at one stage so we really got under their skin.”
The lineout dominance translated directly into Edinburgh’s first try after 57 minutes. With McConnell and Young both challenging at the front and middle, Paulo’s over-throw was seized upon by replacement hooker Jerry Blyth-Lafferty, who fired a long pass to James Grayson in midfield. From the ensuing ruck, Blyth-Lafferty broke through two defenders before offloading to McConnell. The flanker was stopped short, but prop Paul Hill finished from close range to put Edinburgh 10-6 ahead.
McConnell, who made a barnstorming Test debut against the USA last November, is building a compelling case for a Scotland call-up with each passing week. Townsend and Dalziel will have left Hive Stadium with plenty to consider.
